Spatial Disorientation Accidents in General Aviation.
Dr. Hannah Baumgartner is an Engineering Research Psychologist for the FAA. She leads the Fatigue and Human Performance lab in the Human Factors division at the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute. Dr. Baumgartner has a broad range of research interests including fatigue across aviation operations, evaluating decision making in agricultural aviation operations, and human factors risks and mitigations associated with shiftwork in helicopter air ambulance operations.
Dr. Baumgartner received her Ph.D. in Biopsychology from the University of Michigan and has a background in neuroscience, psychology, and human factors. She is a member of various safety related groups including the U.S. Helicopter Safety Team’s Fatigue Working Group and co-leads the Fatigue Working Group under the Human Factors Task Force Aviation Rulemaking Committee.

From Idea to Research​​​​
Dr. Anna Clebone Ruskin is a Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Ruskin specializes in teaching operating room workflow, procedures, ultrasound, and ergonomics to new trainees. Clinically, her focus is in the neurosurgical and otolaryngologic operating rooms. Her research focuses on human performance in the operating room, including critical event checklists and ergonomics. In the air traffic control environment, Dr. Ruskin co-authored an alarm design framework, resulting in the creation of several new alarms. Her work has been published in Aerospace Medicine and Human Performance, Transportation Research, Pediatric Anesthesia, The Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, Current Opinion in Anesthesiology, the Journal of Clinical Monitoring and Computing, Anesthesia and Analgesia, and Anesthesiology. Dr. Ruskin also focuses on mentoring faculty and trainees through the steps of a research project, from idea to data to publication.

​Aviation Fatigue Counterneasures​

John Caldwell is an Experimental psychologist, with over 30 years of experience conducting and directing sleep-management and fatigue-countermeasure research with organizations to include the US Army’s Medical Research and Materiel Command, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory. He has published over 100 scientific papers and delivered numerous lectures on sleep and fatigue management as well as on the health ramifications of insufficient sleep to a wide variety of organizations to include the National Sleep Foundation, the National Transportation Safety Board, the Swiss Aviation Safety Office, the Colombian Aviation Authority, Etihad Airlines, United Airlines, and others. He holds the US Air Force’s highest honor for research and development that led to a substantial improvement in operational effectiveness.

The Human Factors of Aerospace Safety and Mission Success
The most versatile, creative component of an aerospace crewed activity is the human in the loop. It is also the most challenging, as humans are impacted by the entire system.
These impacts can be felt in the areas of nutrition, performance, sleep, and social connection. Advanced technologies, like Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be or assistance, but they may result in additional demands on the human. This panel will address these topics and more.
